What is Thermography?

Thermography is a process that applies powder to ink while the ink is wet and is heated and cured to give a high gloss raised image. The printed sheets is passed though a powder hopper on a conveyer belt allowing the powder to stick to the wet ink, the excess thermo powder in then vacuumed off and the sheet continues along the belt into an oven there the thermo powder becomes molten. Whilst in it molten state the thermographed sheet is exposed to ultra violate where it is cured and is instantly dry to the touch.

The Brief History of Thermography

The Thermographic process or Thermo as it more commonly known was developed in the late 1950s. Popular with the Letterpress Jobbing Printer to enhance invitations, business cards and personal stationery, Thermographic print became a faster and more cost effective alternative to die stamping. In its early stages Thermo powder was readily available from suppliers such as Addressograph & Adana.

By the early 1980s Thermographic print was used by a few specialist companies on fully automatic machines imported from America. The Thermo machines coupled with lithographic presses made Thermography even more affordable and with a strong American influence Thermo become popular with large corporate and international companies. Many solicitors took advantage of the easy and speed of Thermography especially larger companies with constantly changing partners.

By the mid 1980s a few strong “trade only” suppliers of Thermography had made the Thermo market easily accessible to everyone. Companies such as Postglow Printer Limited, Joseph Parkins, The Perfecta Press, Colorise, Acon Press & Frankel Printers were supping the print trade with high quality Thermographic print.

The introduction of office laser printers in the late 1980s proved challenging for the Thermo market as the powder used in the Thermo process was not compatible with laser printers. This was soon rectified by the Thermo powder suppliers who developed laser proof Thermo powders that is still used today. Due to the development of Laser Thermography the Thermo trade printer and their clients have benefited immensity.

To the present day where large Banks, Corporate and Blue Chip companies are using Thermography to enhance their image. Postglow have now incorporated most of the Thermographic trade in to one large group. This gives customers piece of mind knowing that they are truly dealing with the Masters of Thermography at Thermographic House.
